IAI Board of Directors Election

The IAI Board of Directors serves the Information Architecture community with new elections every two years.

We are pleased to announce that elections will begin soon for the IAI Board of Directors. 

We hope you will join us in nominating leadership to the upcoming Board of Directors for 2016-2018. To kick things off, we are pleased to announce elections for five (5) board positions. Details on IAI Director positions.

  • President
  • Director of Communications (Secretary)
  • Director of Development
  • Director of Programming and Events
  • Membership Director

The start of our nomination period begins on January 12. At the close of the nomination period, nominees who choose to run will prepare position statements in advance of the election period.

  • Nominations open January 12 - 20
  • Voting will be held from February 15-27
  • Announcements March 1

We hope you’ll consider applying or nominating someone for one of these positions once the nominations are open.


Nomination Process

Any IAI member may nominate anyone for consideration as a candidate for the election.[3]  Self-nominations are welcome.  If you know someone who has demonstrated commitment and leadership potential, please consider submitting a nomination. Any nominee may request that their nomination be withdrawn.The nominations will be posted publicly and updated regularly on the web site. 

The IAI Board of Directors will lead a webinar that provides more details about the roles and responsibilities for each position. This will also provide nominees an opportunity to ask questions about the roles. Once nominees accept the nomination, we will lead a second webinar to answer any questions about the election process.

Election Process

Upon conclusion of the nomination process, nominees will be asked whether they intend to run for office.  Those who decide to run will be expected to provide a biography and position statement, which will be posted along with a photograph (optional), original nominations, and any letters of support on the web site.

The election itself will begin on January 12, 2018. All members will receive an email that provides instructions. No votes will be accepted after the February 27, 2018 voting deadline. Winners of the election will be notified by the Election Committee. In case of a draw, the winner will be chosen by lot. Should a winner decline the invitation to serve, runners-up will be contacted. Once all open positions are filled, the Election Committee will notify the membership of the results.

Suggested Selection Criteria

The presiding Board of Directors recommends the following criteria for consideration:

  • Commitment – Candidates should have demonstrated real commitment through action to IAI and to the information architecture community.
  • Leadership – Candidates should possess the ability to motivate, organize and lead diverse, international teams of volunteers.
  • Relationships – Candidates should have solid professional networks and the ability to build bridges between disciplines, cultures and organizations.

The Director of Communications (Secretary) and Director of Development are open for new candidates as current board members have fulfilled two consecutive terms. The President, Director of Events,  and Membership Director are open and current board members are eligible to run again. The Director of Operations (Treasurer) and Director of Education roles currently mid-term and the Strategic Projects Director role will not carry over into the upcoming election term.
