Communication to the IA Community Regarding IAC Ban and Path Forward

Delivered in email on February 7, 2019

Greetings,

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we worked together as a board to launch elections and figure out our immediate path forward. There are many good things that have emerged from this situation and the board has decided to focus on the positive change we can make moving forward.

It has been almost 10 years since the IA Institute has held a conference. We admit that we were not adequately prepared to take over the IA Conference when we voted in November. However, we accept our responsibility to carry it into the future. We cannot go back and do things differently, however, we would like to reaffirm our commitment to our community, our mission, our vision and our guiding principles.

The IA Institute’s mission is to promote awareness, provide resources for learning, practicing and teaching information architecture and to support and expand opportunity for practitioners. Our vision is a world where everybody knows that information architecture is the practice for making the complex clear.

Our mission, vision and guiding principles have been carried forward from previous administrations. Like our founders and past leadership, we are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone in our community. We will not tolerate behavior, of any kind, that threatens the safety or the values we uphold in our profession. We are guided by the following principles:

  • Provide an environment that fosters learning in a safe, respectful, open and inclusive manner.
  • Cultivate acquaintanceship among members.
  • Promote and advance in every way the practice of information architecture.
  • Create and develop interest and knowledge of information architecture worldwide.

We have heard the concerned voices of our community. We acknowledge the request by persons involved with the code of conduct violation reported at IA Summit 2018 and will no longer investigate the matter unless authorized to do so. We will stand behind the decision communicated by the IA Conference co-chairs to ‘bar from entry people who have violated the codes of conduct’.

We are working with the conference co-chairs as well as the Global Executive Producer of World IA Day to evaluate and approve the code of conduct drafted for each of these 2019 events. Once these events conclude, we will leverage the aforementioned documents to create a unified code of conduct that applies to all events held by the Information Architecture Institute. Once ready, we will make it available to members for constructive feedback.

In addition, we are seeking a professional firm skilled at handling code of conduct violations to ensure a sensitive, fair and objective approach while providing a well documented process and resolution. In conjunction with this effort we are researching technology platforms that may offer an additional level of safety and comfort when reporting a violation.

The Board of Directors collectively agrees that it is important to learn from what has happened and use this information to strengthen our community and our organization now and in the future.

Our immediate focus will be:

  1. Holding our annual election and ensuring our newly elected board members have a voice in our path forward.
  2. Ensuring World IA Day and the IA Conference are safe and successful so that we may continue to advance the discipline of information architecture.

Our election schedule is outlined below. We hope you will consider applying or nominating someone for one of our open Director positions. For more information about our election process and open positions, please visit our website.
