Annual Members Meeting to be Held in Denver on Thursday, March 31

The IA Institute Annual Members Meeting will be held in Denver on Thursday, March 31, concurrently with the IA Summit.  If you plan to be in Denver, stop into the Wynkoop Brewery at 8pm for a brief review of the Institute's progress for the year, followed by the IA Institute sponsored karaoke party. We will release our 2010 Annual Report on April 1.

2010 IA Salary and Benefits Survey Results

The 2010 IA Salary and Benefits Survey results are now available. Check out this year's results including:

  • An average salary around USD$95,252, up $5,252 from 2009
  • Another relatively even split between male and female respondents, with men for the first time showing a noticeable lead over women in pay.
  • We changed our questions about job titles and tasks this year, splitting out position level from are of practice.  The results allow for an interesting comparison of IAs and UXers and IxDs
  • Basic information architecture and interaction design tasks are again highly reported, and
  • With more than half of respondents having a Masters Degree or above, the graduate school "Should I or shouldn't I" question is starting to look like maybe you should.

For more details, as well as a lot of new information on management responsibilities, tasks and benefits, visit the complete 2010 Salary Survey results on our website at: http://iainstitute.org/en/learn/research/salary_survey.php

Interaction11 Student Emissary Reports

In February, we sent two student members to Interaction11 in Boulder as emissaries.  Their job to report back to us on their conference experience.  Many times when we send student emissaries to a conference, it is their first time at a User Experience Conference.  Here is what Molly Green and Wesley Owen had to say:

Reflections on IxDA’s Interaction 11 — Report #1
by Molly Green
M.S. Candidate in HCI
School of Informaton
University of Michigan

I am extremely grateful to the IA Institute for sending me to Interaction 11 as their student liaison. I learned a ton about the field of interaction design both from the structured talks at the conference and from all of the professionals I spoke with. I found people very open and approachable, and the structure of the conference provided a lot of opportunities to connect. I never knew that a group of 600+ (if that’s really what it was) could feel so intimate. I also never knew that a conference could be so fun, with cold beer breaks in the afternoons and parties into the night. At first I was a little intimidated by what a male-dominated scene it seemed to be, but by the second day more women seemed to be finding their voices in the conference setting. I met quite a few intelligent and articulate people who were passionate about the field and encouraging of newcomers.  Read more of Molly's report

Reflections on IxDA's Interaction 11 — Report #2
by Wesley Owen
M.S. Candidate in Information Science and Library Science
School of Library and Information Science
Indiana University, Bloomington

The Interaction11 conference from IxDA was certainly a worthwhile experience. Several months ago I discovered it was sold out, which made for an unexpected surprise when the IA Institute notified me of the opportunity to attend Interaction11 as a Student Emissary to provide some notes to the rest of the IA Institute.

Interaction11, Boulder, CO, USA (image by Wesley Owen)My perspective on the conference is that of a student attending for the first time. In 2012 I’ll graduate with a Master of Information Science and a Master of Library Science from Indiana University’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). This past January I began an information architecture/usability internship at Indiana University’s Office of Creative Services.

The conference sessions addressed the needs of people from a wide variety of backgrounds, from professionals to academics, and from experienced designers to those who are just starting off. Some sessions focused on theory and principles related to interaction design while other sessions were case studies or focused on specific actionable methods. It is obvious that some discussions about interaction will continue into future conferences. Most sessions were related to designing for the web, mobile, and tablets, but there were also examples of other types of interaction (such as for music and architectural art). None of the sessions came across as sales pitches. Read more of Wesley's report
