Back to School Edition

September approaches and much of the world is returning to school for Fall classes. We've put together below a list of great education and conference opportunities, most with IA Institute member discounts. We are pleased to see many new educational opportunities in the field of Information Architecture, including new Master's degree programs from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon in France and Università per Stranieri di Perugia in Italy, as well as a new User Experience Concentration at Pratt Institute in New York City, featuring courses in IA and usability. We would love to hear about other academic programs in the field of IA. If you are enrolled in an IA program, let us know and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter. Also, if you are attending or, better yet, presenting a paper at an academic conference, let us know so we can add a link to the IA Library. Send email to info@iainstitute.org.

UXconnect @ Kent State University

imageA Day in the Life of an Information Architect
by Stacy Surla
16 September 2013, noon EDT

UXconnect@Kent State is a speaker series presented jointly by the User Experience Design program at Kent State University and the Information Architecture Institute (IAI) to provide an open forum for ideas to be to share and discuss ideas among professionals and students in User Experience Design (UXD).

Join us on September 16 for "A Day in the Live of an Information Architect" with Stacy Surla. What would it be like to work as an information architect in Tokyo? Or be one of just a handful of IAs in the country of South Africa? Can you imagine yourself heading up your own boutique consultancy in a metropolitan city – and if so what would be your value proposition? What are your prospects as a freelancer in the rural south of the United States? Or as a newly graduated IA interviewing with a large commercial firm?

The employment outlook for IA is healthy overall. Knowing this is encouraging – so now what? To help craft your personal career storyline, join this web conference to engage in some creative, divergent thinking about what’s possible.

This presentation reviews the employment and career landscape for IA. It draws from salary surveys, career workshops, interviews with IAs across the world, and several decades of experience hiring and getting hired in consulting and UX domains. We will consider the life of an IA from several slices, with each affording different ways of looking for opportunities. These include geographic (metro/rural, UX density), field of work (retail, consulting, government), focus (innie/outie), tactical-strategic position (hands-on vs vision, design for discrete platforms vs design for systems), and market situation (new IA, experienced IA, manager, owner). The talk takes its form from the outline of a publication project, “Information Architect: A Day in the Life.” Participants will be encouraged to pose questions for the project to address, and will take away ideas about what’s possible in their own careers.

If you have an idea for a UXconnect@Kent State presentation, submit a proposal.

3 days of inspiring talks, formative workshops and wailing bagpipes

Over 30 voices, well-known and new, with compelling stories from the trenches, ideas and theories to share.
Over 30 good reasons to join us and continue the conversation.

Over the past nine years, we have broken down cultural barriers, initiated dozens of conferences across Europe, and forged careers. We are proud of our accomplishments, but we know we can achieve even more.

Today, our focus is on breaking down global barriers and sharing information far beyond European borders. This is why our programme now features presentations from the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.

Yet we remain European. So, what is “Europe”? In terms of geography, we’re east of Greenland, west of Moscow, south of the Artic, and north of the Mediterranean. But the geography is secondary. "Europe" is more a state of mind than an area on a map. But that doesn’t make it less distinct.

Learn. Share. Network. That is what we help you do. And we hope to see you in Edinburgh.

IA Institute Participates at W3C Rich Multi-Modal Workshop

The IA Institute was invited to participate in the W3C's workshop on Rich Multi-Modal Interaction. Operations Manager Noreen Whysel and IAI co-founder Bev Corwin attended. Noreen gave a use case presentation on the first day showcasing the Institute's work on its web refactoring project and the W3C Web Redesign Task Force, which includes several IA Institute members.

According to the W3C, "This workshop was aimed at accentuating the merits of HTML5 and the W3C Multimodal Architecture to help create the appropriate level of awareness of the maturity of the MMI Architecture and its suitability for developing innovative and compelling user-experiences across applications/devices." Noreen presented on how having a solid information architecture foundation supports user interfaces regardless of user modality (speech, touch, gesture and voice, etc).

Top priorities established by workshop attendees included device/service discovery, in which Semantic Web Services were cited as important means to accessing meaning via machine read resources (which may be of interest to IAs involved in ontology development). Another priority was HTML5 integration, in which several use cases and problems were presented.

A summary of the event is available on the W3C MMI website at:
https://www.w3.org/2013/07/mmi/summary.php

Presentations are located here:

An Answer to the Pains of Integrating Agile and UX
Review of Lean UX: Applying Lean Principles to Improve User Experience

I recently attended UXPA 2013 in D.C. by Ambrose Little
Overall I found Lean UX to be an incredibly insightful and helpful compilation of principles and suggestions for practice/improving process and collaboration as outlined in my review of the book. As I was reading, though, I had some questions come up that I felt weren’t answered–or maybe I missed the answer. Since others may have…
