Updates for a Thriving, Sustainable Institute

As we introduced at the IAI Annual General Meeting during the IA Summit in Baltimore this year, the IAI is at a transition point.

We have recognized that there are some basic, but surmountable obstacles that are currently hamper the IAI from fulfilling its promise, including:

  • The somewhat small size of the organization hampers our ability to engage potential partners, including sponsors, that want to reach a wider audience.
  • The revenue stream from memberships is not enough to offset the loss of revenue from the IDEA conference.
  • And the Board structure does not allow for the right level of accountability in the context of this volunteer organization.

After studying these issues very carefully, we are making changes to IAI structure and operations. Details on each of these will be posted on our website in the next two weeks, which will include:

1 - Revamped Membership Model, including FREE memberships

2 - Board Changes

3 - New Election Timing

4 - Renewed Focus on Sponsorship

Keep an eye on the IA Institute website for further announcements. As we implement these changes, feel free to reach out to us with any questions.

Thanks for being such a great community!

The 9th European Information Architecture Conference

September 26-28, 2013, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Over the past nine years, we have broken down cultural barriers, initiated dozens of conferences across Europe, and forged careers. We are proud of our accomplishments, but we know we can achieve even more.

Today, our focus is on breaking down global barriers and sharing information far beyond European borders. This is why our programme now features presentations from the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.

Yet we remain European. So, what is “Europe”? In terms of geography, we’re east of Greenland, west of Moscow, south of the Artic, and north of the Mediterranean. But the geography is secondary. “Europe” is more a state of mind than an area on a map. But that doesn’t make it less distinct.

Learn.  Share.  Network.

Optimizing UI icons for faster recognition
by Alla Kholmatova
What makes an icon a valuable addition to the interface, rather than a mere decorative element? Intuitiveness, aesthetic value, memorability, intercultural perception? While an effective icon would combine many of those characteristics, I’d like to focus on one measure–speed of recognition, or how fast a specific icon can be discovered and identified. In a simple…

UX One-liners: The UX of UX
by Nathan Gao
A little background to start: I’ve had the honor of working as a designer-in-residence for General Assembly’s User Experience Design Immersive Pilot Program (UXDI) from June through July. Our team built, launched, and taught a UX course 5-days a week, 8-hours a day, for 8-weeks straight.  It was quite the challenging, yet rewarding experience. However,…

The Distant Summit of Enterprise Design: Review of Intersection
by Marianne Sweeny
Lately, I have been fascinated by mountain climbing. I am reading every book that I can find on the subject. As I sat down to write this review, I found the mountain climbing as a metaphor for enterprise design sticking with me. Milan Guenther’s book Intersection does an excellent job of showing us the view…
