The date of the annual meeting will be announced as we get closer to the Summit.

Going forward, the IA Institute plans to add additional trainings and other opportunities that will bring additional member benefits to the Benefactor and potentially to the Professional Membership levels.
The IA Institute will continue to seek and recognize individual and corporate sponsors at higher levels than the Benefactor Membership, as well, through event sponsorship and other opportunities.
World IA Day
We are excited to present our third annual World IA Day celebration on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in 23 locations all over the world. In 2013 we counted over 2300 attendees. Registration has opened at some locations and we encourage you to consider hosting your own grassroots event. Visit worldiaday.org for details.
Special thanks to the myriad volunteers who lent their time and talents to make World IA Day 2013 a success: Executive Producer Jessica Duverneay, Joe Elmendorf, Brad Simpson, Laura Creekmore, Noreen Whysel, Dan Klyn and all of our local site coordinators. We have a wonderful group of global planners for World IA Day 2014 led by last year's Ann Arbor coordinator Kaarin Hoff and are looking forward to February.
Partnerships and Development
We were pleased to announce several new partnerships this year, notably Kent State University's UXconnect, UXPA and SEGD, the Society for Experiential Graphic Design. UXconnect, a joint production of the IA Institute and Kent State's IAKM program, is a monthly webinar series covering topics in information architecture. We have a great lineup for you in the coming year with presentations from Kate Wilhelm, Whitney Quesenbery, Rhonda Ranney and Marianne Sweeny. Due to a reciprocal arrangement, we were able to offer IA Institute members a special member rate for both SEGD's Xlab 2013 in Queens, NY and UXPA's annual event in Washington, DC. Our relationships with UXPA, ASIS&T and IxDA remain strong.
The IA Institute continues to partner with related organizations and adjacent disciplines, and many of these partnerships include benefits for IAI members. These include discounted conference admission for the IA Summit, EuroIA, ASIS&T webinars, TOGAF 9 and ArchiMate Foundation trainings, Online Information UK, UX LX, Follow the UX Leader, WebVisions, O'Reilly's Fluent and Velocity Conferences, Library 2.013, the Digital Asset Management Conference, Semantic Technology & Business and many other local and regional conferences and meetings. Discounts from publishers Rosenfeld Media and O'Reilly Media, as well as ongoing product discounts from Optimal Workshop are other great reasons to be a member of the IA Institute. We continue to support excellent publications such as the Journal of Information Architecture, Boxes and Arrows (also celebrating their tenth year) and sadly said goodbye to Johnny Holland, which closed this year.
We are committed to bringing Information Architecture training to our community by producing UXconnect events with Kent State and supporting international and regional events like Reframing IA roundtable workshop (2013) and Teaching IA (2014) at the IA Summit, and the annual Annual Symposium on Communicating Complex Information (SCCI). We are engaging the broader tech and semantic community in conversations around IA. This year we presented at the W3C Rich Multimodal Interaction Working Group meeting on IA in multimodal design. We also joined the W3C Redesign Task Force and the Usability and Human Factors group of the Identity Ecosystem Working Group. Our involvement in these initiatives helps to promote the importance of information architecture on an international level and gets IA thinking into the design of international digital standards.
Recognizing Our Wonderful Sponsors
The IA Institute provides informative programs like World IA Day as well as member perks and programs, including the IA Research grant, mentoring, job board, salary survey and other occasional contests, research and promotions. Infrastructure, staffing and logistics represent a significant expenditure to ensure smooth sailing. Please keep us in mind if you would like to sponsor an activity in 2014. With 23 World IA Day local events coming up in February, we count on local sponsors for their help and appreciate it greatly.
Huge thanks go out to the following World IA Day 2013 global sponsors:
For a full list of local and global sponsors, visit our 2013 World IA Day website.
Thank You to Our Volunteers
Last but certainly not least, we thank our Volunteers, without whom we could not provide the resources, services and community that we have today.
Huge thanks to Lou Rosenfeld for pushing us to embrace new levels of membership. His #IAIPledge campaign brought in badly needed funds and got the conversation going around what it means to be a member of our community. We welcome our first Benefactor members Amy Silvers, Chris Baum and John Cady.
Our gratitude goes to our loyal Job Board volunteers, Marianne Sweeny, Austin Govella and Samantha Bailey. Barbara Wiel Marin who took on the lead translation role this year. Thanks to the many translators keeping this initiative alive. Thanks also to Dorian Taylor worked hard this year on a re-imagined web environment for our volunteers, which we hope to continue developing in the coming year. Those who signed on to the infrastructure group should see a jump in activity as the new board comes online. Bev Corwin and Shari Thurow continued to work with Noreen Whysel on development and Shari presented at numerous conferences and ASIS&T webinars on behalf of the IA Institute.
Thanks to student ambassador Ashley Kelleher, who represented us at Semantic Technology & Business, and to the 100+ mentor volunteers, helping to provide guidance to students and practitioners worldwide. We have many, many people working to bring you World IA Day festivities and encourage all to participate. Thanks to everyone working to make World IA Day 2014 an amazing event.
Tell Us What You Need
The IAI is where we find our kindred spirits, and we want to sustain the community that has given us some of our deepest connections, amazing ideas, and most rewarding conversations. We’d love to hear from you! What do you need? What do you want? How can you help? How can you be helped? Understanding our collective needs is essential for continuing the work of building an organization that is relevant, rewarding and sustainable. The Institute exists to provide infrastructure and build bridges across and beyond our community. Use those assets; tell the Institute what you need that isn't there today. Let's ensure the energy and resources from the Institute are used towards the things that really matter to you.
Other great things are happening in 2014. Look for our 2013 Salary Survey results in January (Preliminary data is available at Tableau Public). Meanwhile enjoy these last few days of 2013.
Happy Holidays, and best wishes for 2014!
Your 2013 IA Institute Board of Directors and Staff,
Andrea Resmini, President
Dan Klyn, Treasurer
Chris Baum, Secretary
Laura Creekmore, Board Member
Shari Thurow, Board Member
