IAI NEWS - http://www.iainstitute.org

Greetings, fellow IAs. Another month has passed and as usual a lot is happening in the IA world.

On the IAI side, it is time for our annual board member elections. By the time you get this, nominations will have closed (check out the nominees: http://iainstitute.org/en/about/people/nominations_2007.php. Next step is to ask our excellent nominees if they would like to run for the board. Then we open voting on 2 September (we'll send a message to all members with a link to the voting form). Good luck to all the nominees!

We continually try to improve the way we manage our membership processes. As some of you may know from experience, our new membership system is not working out quite as we hoped. We are starting to look at new systems - one important feature we are looking at is to allow us to take membership in currencies other than $US to better reflect our status as an international organization. To find the best fit for our members, we'd like your input. Email membership AT iainstitute DOT org if you would like to recommend a system or would like to be on the committee to find and select the next option. A good database will reward membership so the sooner the better!

On the IAI mentoring front, Mags Hanley has scheduled a 'listen and learn' session for UX Managers on 6 September. Find out more details here:

The next few months are definitely IA conference season:

If you can't make it to one of these in person, check out our series of SecondLife presentations. Our two presentations in August were big successes. Peter Morville compressed his "Information architecture 3.0" workshop down to an hour (must be the tight jeans) and presented it to a packed house. Marianne Sweeny presented her IA Summit presentation "SEO and IA" and also drew a big crowd. If you missed them, you can grab slides, check out photos, and view YouTube videos at these links:
http://iainstitute.org/news/000657.php
http://iainstitute.org/news/000664.php

The next SecondLife event will be Sam Ladner and Matthew Milan's
"Backcasting" session - September 13 at 12:00 noon Pacific Standard Time. Backcasting is a neat strategy development technique and they explain it well. I might even get up early in the morning for this.

And talking about conferences:

That's it from me. I have conferences to prepare for...

Sincerely,

Donna Maurer
Marketing & Communications, IAI Board of Directors

Foundations of Interaction Design
by David Malouf

Interaction Design focuses on the behavior of interfaces, rather than their form or structure. David Malouf proposes four foundations that underpin that practice. They help orchestrate a holistic narrative and give us all things to seriously consider when we look at our creations.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Contact volunteer AT iainstitute DOT org if you are interested in joining either of these projects:

Product Selection, Installation and Revolution

The IA Institute needs a member relations software solution that fits the sophistication and schedules of its members! Our current software is not working for this audience and we must find a new one pronto. How can you help? Contact volunteer AT iainstitute DOT org.

  • Join committee to find and implement new software solution. Consider what should software do for IAI members?
  • Lead or contribute to a database team who will identify what data to collect, specify attributes and field types, create user-friendly forms, and migrate data into the new system.
  • Focus your attention on how member services are integrated with current website, utilize your IA and customer relations knowledge to increase and improve points of entry for IAI members.

We are currently recruiting for all teams. Work will be simultaneous and on-going. Time commitment is flexible. In the end, we hope to have a great new system, much more structured and flexible data collection, and a website that is usable and useful to members.

*Spanish Language Site

We are seeking volunteers to help to launch the Spanish language version of the IAI website. Bring your translation or web editing/php skills to the team. Please contact volunteer AT iainstitute DOT org if you are interested.
