IAI NEWS - http://www.iainstitute.org

Summer: the time to relax and enjoy the weather? Well, here at the IAI we have been enjoying everything but the weather. Mostly, because the Board, Advisors and Volunteers together live in 19 time zones and on both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. But also because we are busy developing our programs, aiming for a more professional organization for all Information Architects.

Here are some examples of what we're working on:

  • The team behind IDEA Ð www.ideaconference.org, our flagship conference, has announced the pre-conference program and has gathered an impressive speaker list. In the sponsor department they have made some good progress (including a sponsor for the welcome reception) but we still have many great sponsorship opportunities available. Please visit www.ideaconference.org/sponsors.html to learn more.
  • Besides IDEA, you may also have seen announcements of Euro-IA and OZ-IA, two successful regional conferences that the IAI supports and where being a member means you'll get a discount.
  • Discussion lists for Australia and all Portuguese speaking IAs have been established as we ramp up for a more formalized Local Group program that has been on the agenda of the weekly Board calls. Visit our brand new "Discuss IA" page http://iainstitute.org/en/network/discuss_ia.php.
  • Our Translations program is now informally joining forces with the Website Redesign program to come up with a unified structure for our website in all available languages.

And this year's hard-work-during-summer award goes to the Higher Education in IA working group, a global initiative supported by the IA Institute. Here are some quotes from initiative leader, Andrea Resmini, on the project's current status:

  • "Our basic premise is that although IA is a well-established profession and community of practice, it's not yet a fully recognized academic discipline and it's not, with a few notable exceptions, an acknowledged course of study in most of the EU."
  • "At the heart of it lies a simple question: What is the understanding of Information Architecture on which higher IA education
programmes are established? That is a tough question, especially if you ask the professionals themselves, as there is for sure a certain gap between the existing field of practice and the emerging field of study."
  • "Our current roadmap is pretty simple: survey, journal, and dissemination. Not necessarily in this order, as we have already started to talk, meet, present, discuss."

Members of the working group are: Katriina Bystršm (SE), Linus de Petris (SE), Heiko Haubitz (DE), Dorte Madsen (DK), Nils Pharo (NO), Andrea Resmini (IT), Luca Rosati (IT), Stanislaw Skorka (PL) (and they are looking for a Dutch and UK member).

Look for more results of this group at Euro-IA and on the dedicated website, which we will announce in a future newsletter.

Enjoy your summer, I know I am enjoying mine!

Peter Boersma,
IAI Board of Directors
Director for Membership and Local Groups
