IAI NEWS - http://www.iainstitute.org
Hi fellow IAs...
This will be my last newsletter-intro-from-a-Director as it is election time. That means four board positions are available as board members step down or stand for re-election. The way it works is - we take nominations until August 31, have a final nominees list by September 7, then vote between September 8-14. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please do so here (you can nominate more than one person):
For more information on the process: http://iainstitute.org/en/about/people/election_2008.php
For a list of current nominees see: http://iainstitute.org/en/about/people/nominations_2008.php
We're also pleased to announce that we have a new Executive Director on board. Paul Goodson joined us this month and will be focusing on helping us get some of our back office functions running smoothly. We'll follow up with our new ED's biography and updates on the great work he's doing in next month's issue.
On the conference front, there are a three exciting events in the next two months. IAI members receive discounts to all these events (and if you aren't a member, do some sums - the discount is more than membership ;)
- Our own conference 'IDEA' is on in early October. Our speakers blogs are buzzing, and other blogs are buzzing about them. Jesse James Garrett has just joined the roster to present on the Aurora Project. All the speakers topics and bios are available on the website. The program is looking fantastic and registration is open: http://ideaconference.org/program.html
And finally, our grants program is open again. Every year we award two $1,000 USD grants for work that forwards the theory and practice of information architecture. It's time to put your application in the hat! More information on the grants program is available at http://www.iainstitute.org/en/members/grants/grant_program.php
And even though you won't read another newsletter introduction from me, rest assured that I'll still be around making noise about IA!
Treasurer, IAI Board of Directors
The IDEA Program is now available online. See updated bios and presentation descriptions at http://ideaconference.org/program.html
What to expect at IDEA?
One hands-on full day workshop offered by Maya Design and two full days of fascinating presentations by designers on the forefront, edges, and fringes of design in an always-on, always-connected world. The IDEA conference is designed for people creating products and services that require users to engage in complex information spaces. This includes information architects, user experience designers, interaction designers, web designers, information designers, game designers... designers in general, really!
Because it's not a large multi-track conference, IDEA is also a great place to network. If you need to hire professionals from any of the above disciplines, or if you are looking for a new career challenge, you have to come to IDEA. Sponsorships are still available, see them at http://ideaconference.org/sponsors.html
IAI is also holding a contest for bloggers. Write about IDEA and you could receive a free registration. The contest ends September 1, so enter now! See our registration page for more details on how to enter http://ideaconference.org/register.html . We greatly welcome our members' help in getting the word out about IDEA. If you'd like to help our marketing campaign contact idea2008 AT ideaconference DOT org .
IAI is a multinational volunteer organization and all of our projects are the work of an active volunteer community. Our members supply the ideas, initiative, and energy it takes to provide services to the IA community. Join that effort by taking on a volunteer role today. Contact volunteer AT iainstitute DOT org if you are interested in any of the following projects or would like to learn more about volunteering.
*LinkedIn Group Coordinators
LinkedIn has improved its services to groups so we want to improve our services to members. Help us make use of LinkedIn's new tools and forums, and get networking! We're sure there's more to LinkedIn than IAI is currently making use of, we need your talent and creativity to make IAI the best group LinkedIn has ever seen
IAI is seeking project managers to give our volunteer initiatives flow, timelines and bring them to fruition. Work with technical volunteers to establish goals, tasks, and distributions. Translations, Library, Education, and Local Groups are all initiatives with great possibilities that just need someone to watch over the build. Major plus – seeing your work completed and shared on the IAI website! Requires great team skills, flexible schedule, a few hours a week, and love of email. Contact volunteer AT iainstitute DOT org for more information.

The August/September issue of the Bulletin is not to miss. Guest editor, Stacy Surla (also of the IA Institute's Board of Directors), leads us through the web of information architecture with a special issue dedicated to the field. This issue's articles bridge the divide between taxonomy and user experience and offer guidance on how to "talk taxonomy" to businesses that increasingly understand and want our expertise.
You will want the full issue, but here is a preview of the topics:
Exploratory Search in Different Information Architectures by Tingting Jiang and Sherry Koshman
Tagging: Emerging Trends by Gene Smith
The Information Architecture Behind Good Web Forms by Luke Wroblewski
Audiences and Artifacts by Nathan Curtis
How to Be a User Experience Team of One by Leah Buley

And don't miss Vivek Deshmukh's take on better intra-networking?
People Finder: Searching Without Logic? Improving the People Finder Application
by Vivek Deshmukh
In large organizations, finding people is one of the most common tasks performed on the company intranet. Instead of settling for the typical, unforgiving people search, take Vivek Deshmukh's advice on how to really help staff find one another.
